Core Measures using DAX

Learn how to create Measures using DAX, which your report designers will need to show KPIs and other performance measures in their reports.

In this course you will learn:

  • What measures are and how they are different to calculated table and column formulas.
  • When to use measures versus calculated columns.
  • The core conventions and best practices for writing good DAX measure code.
  • How to use a range of additional resources to help with DAX formulas.
  • How to create special tables to store your measures.
  • What Filter Propagation is and how to use it.
  • The core concept of Evaluation Context and how to write DAX formulas in both Row Context and Filter Context.
  • How to use the following types of functions:
    • Simple aggregator functions.
    • Iterator functions.
    • The basics of the CALCULATE function.
    • Tables functions (like ALL and FILTER).
    • Other useful building-block functions.
  • How to use the CALCULATE with advanced (table) filters, including filters based on other measures.

Pre-course Requirements

Required knowledge. Before attending this course you must have met the following pre-requisites:

  1. Completion of the Power BI: Kickstarter (Level 1) course AND have some practice using DAX for basic new table and new column calculations.
  2. Good intermediate level skills with DAX or Microsoft Excel formulas and functions, including functions like IF and VLOOKUP, as well as the ability to nest functions to create more advanced formulas.

Useful knowledge. The following skills and knowledge might be useful, but are not essential to have. We cover these topics in the course, but knowing a little about these topics may give you a head start.

  • An understanding what a Relational Database is, why they are used, and how a one-to-many relationship works. You can watch this video to refresh your knowledge: Coming Soon.

Pre-course learning topics. There are some pre-course learning topics to complete in the form of videos with cheat sheets. These are important to watch as they are assumed knowledge for the course and are only covered in revision in the sessions. These will be sent out to the participants after the booking is complete.

Pre-course Setup Checklist. There is a pre-course setup checklist which you must complete before your first session to ensure you have the correct software and hardware installed and configured before you can attend the course. This will also be sent out to the participants after the booking is complete.

Training Resources

The following resources are provided as part of this course:

  • Cheat sheets. Core concepts and some 'how to' guides are provided in cheat sheets to help apply the knowledge and skills back in the workplace.
  • Exercise files. Class exercise files and data sources are provided, which are used during the sessions and which can also be used for further practice after the sessions.
  • PowerPoint Slides. A copy of the PowerPoint slides used throughout the course will be provided so that participants do not need to try and copy slides, or write extensive notes throughout the course.
