Advanced Measures Using DAX

Learn more advanced DAX concepts and functions, building on your basic skills to create a wider range of practical performance measures.

In this course you will learn:

  • How Evaluation Context works  at a deeper level and be able to combine Row and Filter contexts in one statement.
  • How to use VALUES, DISTINCT and a range of other 'building block' functions to build more complex measures.
  • How to create measures to display text values and create dynamic titles.
  • How to use SLECTEDVALUE and create parameters to provide what-if analysis options for your report designers.
  • How to use CALCULATE to select and use a non-active relationship for a calculation.
  • What Time Intelligence functions are, and the importance of a good Calendar table.
  • How to use the built-in time intelligence functions to create basic visuals, including: SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR, PREVIOUSYEAR and TOTALYTD.
  • How to use CALCULATE to shift time and provide time period differences, running totals and comparisons.
  • How to use CALCULATE and FILTER to create custom Time Intelligence functions for non-standard date periods, including financial years and quarters.

Pre-course Requirements

Required knowledge. Before attending this course you must have met the following pre-requisites:

  1. Completion of the Power BI: Core Measures using DAX (Level 2) course AND have some practice using DAX to create basic measures using the core concepts and functions.

Pre-course learning topics. There are some pre-course learning topics to complete in the form of videos with cheat sheets. These are important to watch as they are assumed knowledge for the course and are only covered in revision in the sessions. These will be sent out to the participants after the booking is complete.

Pre-course Setup Checklist. There is a pre-course setup checklist which you must complete before your first session to ensure you have the correct software and hardware installed and configured before you can attend the course. This will also be sent out to the participants after the booking is complete.

Training Resources

The following resources are provided as part of this course:

  • Cheat sheets. Core concepts and some 'how to' guides are provided in cheat sheets to help apply the knowledge and skills back in the workplace.
  • Exercise files. Class exercise files and data sources are provided, which are used during the sessions and which can also be used for further practice after the sessions.
  • PowerPoint Slides. A copy of the PowerPoint slides used throughout the course will be provided so that participants do not need to try and copy slides, or write extensive notes throughout the course.
